1. FIND 'THE ONE'
We all have different lashes, so we all want something different from our magic wands. Ask yourself; are you lacking volume, length, thickness, or curl? We photographed 100 mascaras on the same eye to show you what really does what. Find them here and scroll down for the techniques to nail the perfect application.
2. POP A PRIMER ON
To avoid seeing your mascara smudged onto your upper or lower eyelids as soon as you've left the house make sure you use an eyelid primer underneath your makeup. Our faves are the Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer and Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion.
3. HARNESS THE POWER OF POWDER
With your eyes closed, dust some NYX translucent powder over your lashes before applying mascara. This acts as a primer to make them look full.
4. ROTATE YOUR BRUSH
To lengthen your lashes, rotate your brush from root to tip as you apply it. Those techy mascaras with auto-rotating brushes weren't made for no reason. We all just thought they were gimmicky.
5. WIGGLE YOUR WAND
Likewise, vibrating mascaras were designed to recreate the makeup artist technique of zigzag-ing your stroke. This action – with any mascara – builds thickness and aids separation.
6. THE TRANSFER TRICK
Do you always get mascara on your eyelids when you're applying it? Catch the excess by using a spoon or business card. Place the shield so it's hugging the eyelid to avoid transfer on the skin.
7. DO THE DISPOSABLE
If you find your normal mascara brush too big for the fine lower lashes try using a different brush dipped in the same mascara. Grab some free disposable wands at makeup counters which are usually slim in shape – perfect for precision.
8. REMOVE EXCESS
To avoid clumps, caking and flaking remove any excess mascara from both ends of the bristles, discarding it on the end of the inner tube. And remember – don't pump the wand as this fills it with air, drying out the formula.
9. GET PERSPECTIVE
When you're applying mascara, step back from the mirror now and then so you can see how your lashes look with perspective. You might discover you need more – or less – to complement the rest of your makeup.
10. THE COMB-OVER
When you're finished and before the lashes dry, use a lash comb to brush them through. This will give you the perfect separation, collecting clumps along the way.
